Subaru Boxer Engine. Balance is control. It's poise and capability. It's power in perfect proportion. Subaru puts performance in balance with an engine unlike any offered by our competitors. The SUBARU BOXER® Engine features a low profile, symmetrical design that puts the weight of the engine lower and in line with the vehicle for better response and control.

Horizontally Opposed Design. The pistons move in 180-degree opposition to each other on a horizontal plane, so each naturally cancels out the vibration of the piston opposite it. Smoother Operation. Step on the accelerator and the revs come on smooth. While there's plenty of power when you need it, it helps enhance your comfort and control.

Durable Construction. The engine's flat design is inherently rigid, and reduces the amount of vibration that “V” or inline engines-with more upright pistons-are subjected to during operation. Low Center of Gravity. CVT. The CVT available in the Legacy 2.5i models is a chain-driven, zeromaintenance unit that transforms the driving experience. Instead of the traditional shifting through each gear, the CVT winds up to optimal rpm and stays there. The Subaru CVT also features paddle-shifters and 6-speed manual mode, so you can savor the classic joy of running through the gears as you carve your favorite ribbon of road.

Efficiency. The 2.5i offers a 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that generates 170 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. That's ample power for a confident drive. What's more, when paired with Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), you can get up to 31 miles to the gallon and achieve over 570 miles on a full tank.1 You'll spend more time enjoying your getaways and less time filling up.

It produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, moving the Legacy 3.6R models with effortless confidence over the road. For smooth shifting to match the delivery of power, it's paired with the 5-speed automatic transmission.

Turbocharged Performance. Turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. For those who desire the kind of lift in their day that only high performance can provide, the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine in the Legacy 2.5GT Limited is ready to oblige. It features an intercooled turbocharger, optimized for quick spooling. When you push the pedal, you'll feel the responsive throttle and feel the turbocharged punch of 265 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. And a standard 6-speed manual transmission always keeps you in control of the action.

Ultra-Smooth and Always Ready. Transmissions. For optimum performance, experience the 6-speed manual to take advantage of the engine's output with a shifter that's been engineered for more precise shifts. Or go for smoothness with control with the 5-speed automatic with manual mode, paddle shifters and downshift rev-matching. And if it's a more efficient drive you seek, experience Lineartronic® CVT with 6-speed manual mode and paddle shifters.

Combining years of rally racing experience and the demands of daily real-world driving, the Legacy 4-wheel independent suspension design maximizes the feel you have for the road. The double-wishbone rear suspension absorbs the worst of the bumps without unsettling the rigid chassis. In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) became the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to reach zero landfill status and be designated a wildlife habitat. And every Subaru plant continues to use green suppliers, reduce manufacturing wastes and cut CO2 emissions.

Wildlife Habitat. In 2003, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. became the first automotive assembly plant to be designated as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. SIA's 800+ acres serves as a home for a wide variety of animals, including: whitetail deer, rabbits, Canadian geese, mallard ducks, squirrels, beavers, coyote, snapping turtles, frogs, red-tail hawks, blue heron, and the bald eagle.
