2013 Subaru Outback | Dynamic Digital Brochure

Love. It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Everything ventured. Everything gained.

Where some people's lives fit the constraints of the conventional, some lives are a little bigger. After all, roads don't always take you where you want to go.

Interior Color and Trim

Full time. Full effect.

Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

Unpaved roads. Unforeseen weather. Getting out there requires getting the most traction. So Outback is equipped with Subaru Symmetrical AWD. It's balanced side-to-side for stability. And it's designed to efficiently route power directly to each wheel all the time to maximize your grip of the road.

All-weather Conditions

Whether it's snow, rain, or just some gravel on the road—slick conditions can surprise even the best planners. But Subaru Symmetrical AWD keeps more power routed to all four wheels versus some other systems that only react to slippage that has already occurred. So you're always ready with exceptional traction and control.

Spirited Handling

With outstanding grip and an exceptionally balanced layout—thanks to its one-of-a-kind, almost perfectly symmetrical design—Subaru Symmetrical AWD helps maximize the connection, and improve the response that your Outback has to the road.

Accident Avoidance.

When danger steps into your path, the safest route is to step right around it. The trademark traction, stability and control of Subaru Symmetrical AWD helps you stay safe by making your Outback ready to react.

All-road conditions

By continually grabbing for every bit of traction possible, and sending power to the wheels with best traction when slippage occurs, Subaru Symmetrical AWD helps give you the freedom to tackle rough or loose road surfaces with confidence.

Low Profile. Big Difference.

Subaru Boxer Engine

The SUBARU BOXER® engine is remarkably different because it generates more than power. The pistons are laid flat in a horizontally opposed design, providing powerful, yet smooth acceleration. And better yet, a lower center of gravity for increased handling stability.

Discover the power of balance.

Subaru Boxer Engine

Balance is control. It's poise and capability. It's power in perfect proportion. Subaru puts performance in balance with an engine unlike any offered by our competitors. The SUBARU BOXER® engine features a low profile, symmetrical design that puts the weight of the engine lower and in line with the vehicle for better response and control.

Horizontally Opposed Design

The pistons move in 180-degree opposition to each other on a horizontal plane, so each naturally cancels out the vibration of the piston opposite it.

Smoother Operation

Step on the accelerator and the revs come on smooth without the extra engineering other engines require. It's comfortable and controlled, with plenty of power when you need it.

Durable Construction

The engine's flat design is inherently rigid, and reduces the amount of vibration that "V" or inline engines–with more upright pistons–are subjected to during operation.

Increased Durability

An engine subjected to less vibration lasts longer. It's no wonder 96% of Subaru vehicles built in the last 10 years are still on the road today.1

1 Based on Polk registration data in the U.S. 2002–2011.

Lower Center of Gravity

The flatter profile and perfectly symmetrical design of the engine block, and the fact that it sits lower in the chassis, make the overall vehicle feel more balanced and nimble versus other designs.

Greater Handling Agility

The vehicle responds more quickly to changes in direction, which gives a feeling of tightness in turns. And it's more likely to feel stable during maneuvers, giving you an increased feeling of being in control at all times.

On the road. On the trails. Discover a powerful drive.

From long family road trips to quick errands around town, the Outback has what you need to get you there and get you going with confidence. Paired with our unique Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, any SUBARU BOXER® engine and transmission combination eagerly delivers the responsiveness and efficiency to power any adventure.

Whether you select the 2.5i for its new SUBARU BOXER® engine offering improved mpg and smooth performance, or the 3.6R for its seamless 256 horsepower on tap, rest assured, you'll get there with ease.

Or maximize flexibility and fun with the fully synchronized 6-speed manual. The Outback 3.6R sports a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, paddle shifters and downshift rev-matching control.

There's more to a Subaru than meets the eye.

The most important thing a Subaru can do is protect the people in it. We're always looking for better ways to do it, and now the Outback is available with an innovative new driver-assist system that's watching the road with you: EyeSight.™1 Like a second pair of eyes to help monitor the road ahead, it watches for potential danger, warns you when it sees potential danger, and can even apply brakes to help you avoid it.

1 EyeSight is a driver-assist system which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, and weather and road conditions. See Owner's Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations.

Pre-Collision Braking

With the help of Pre-Collision Braking, should a driver ahead of you unexpectedly hit their brakes or cut you off, EyeSight™ will warn you, apply the brakes to help you slow your Outback, and at lower speeds can even help you stop.

Pre-Collision Braking is designed to provide automatic braking that either prevents a collision or reduces the severity of a frontal impact. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, and weather and road conditions. See Owner's Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations.

Pre-Collision Throttle Management

With the Pre-Collision Throttle Management feature, EyeSight™ will help minimize or assist you in avoiding impact with large objects in front of your Outback by preventing acceleration, even when the accelerator is fully applied. It can also help to reduce impacts in situations when "Drive" is accidentally selected instead of "Reverse," by cutting power if it sees an object in your path.

The Pre-Collision Throttle Management System is designed to reduce acceleration and minimize the severity of certain frontal impact. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. See Owner's Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Traffic doesn't always flow, but the EyeSight™ Adaptive Cruise Control feature can not only help keep your Outback at a set speed, but also look ahead and help keep your speed automatically adjusted so that your Outback maintains a safe distance from the car ahead of you. It even has the ability to bring your Outback to a complete stop and then resume moving when traffic has begun moving again.

The Adaptive Cruise Control is designed to assist the driver and is not a substitute for safe and attentive driving. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. See Owner's Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations.

Lane Departure and Sway Warning

In the event that you accidentally drift your Outback to the edge of your lane and begin to cross into another, the EyeSight™ Lane Departure and Sway Warning feature watches for clearly marked lane markers and delivers a chime to warn you.

The Lane Departure and Sway Warning operates only when the lane markings are visible and its effectiveness depends on many factors. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. See Owner's Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations.

Do anything. Leave nothing.

From kayaks to coolers, the Outback is just as prepared as you are to pack it all up and go. And with its ample passenger room and new adjustable roof rack system, it's smartly equipped to load the gang and the gear easily, intelligently and securely.

Storage Solutions

Convenience is all around: eight cup holders, door handle pockets sized perfectly for a smartphone or an MP3 player, and a two-stage center console bin, among others. In the back, cargo hooks fold flush. And the underfloor cargo-area storage compar™ent keeps valuables safely and discreetly stowed.

Retractable Roof Rack System

The easy-to-reach roof rack system will hold up to 150 pounds, has cross bars that now feature a new adjustable spread, and retract, folding up and tucking away into the body of the integrated roof rails, helping to reduce wind noise and improving vehicle aerodynamics. What's more, they come standard on every Outback.

Passenger Comfort

Generous legroom, hip room and headroom all around make everyone more comfortable. Features like 65/35 folding and reclining rear seatbacks let you haul large items and passengers together. And because the rear seatbacks recline, rear passengers can pull a lever and enjoy even greater comfort.

Go bigger. Climb steeper. Roam farther.

Performance you can appreciate even when you're not on the road is one thing Outback is known for. With the Electronic Parking Brake with Hill Holder function and a sturdy and raised suspension, complemented by fuel efficiency, your Outback encourages you to push it harder and farther.

With the 4-wheel independent suspension and the 8.7 inches of ground clearance of the Outback, you'll be able to go to places that are seldom seen by other SUV owners.

Maximum ground clearance figure not measured at bumper.

With the press of a button, the Electronic Parking Brake with Hill Holder function helps you come to a complete stop without losing ground, making it easier to go to new places and keeping you there.

With the Lineartronic® CVT, the expected EPA fuel economy rating is 30 mpg highway, giving you over 555 miles on a full tank.1 So where others' roads come to an end, yours is just beginning.

Circumstances don't define a Subaru, they reveal it.

Subaru Active and Passive Safety

It's under the most challenging circumstances that you find the true value of what you drive. With advanced accident avoidance and exceptional passenger protection, the Outback is engineered to be at its best in a worst-case scenario. And now it's available with EyeSight™, a revolutionary driver-assist system that monitors the road ahead and if necessary can help bring your vehicle to a complete stop. Exceptional Control

Safety begins with avoidance. The traction and balance of the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the stability of the SUBARU BOXER® engine provide you with the outstanding control you need to react to hazards. Every Outback also comes with standard VDC electronic stability control, which can detect a loss of control and intervene to help keep you on your intended path.

Stopping Power

Powerful and reliable disc brakes are teamed with advanced technologies to help you stop short of danger. Antilock brakes help make sure you don't lose traction, and the advanced Brake Assist system helps ensure maximum pressure is applied to the brakes as quickly as possible in an emergency situation.

All-around Protection

Our Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame is exceptionally strong for maximum resistance to impact energy, while its unique configuration helps divert that energy away from occupants. Also, front, front-seat side and side-curtain airbags3–standard on every Outback–surround outboard occupants in the event of a crash to further help prevent injury.

Increased Awareness

Before you can avoid danger, you have to see it coming. The Outback features an available Rear-Vision Camera that gives you a clearer view of the area behind your vehicle, so you can be in charge of your surroundings.

1 Ratings based on Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS's) 40-mile-per-hour frontal crash test, 31-mile-per-hour side-impact test, 20-mile-per-hour rear-impact test, and roof-strength test. Love with no limits.

Our connection to our owners and the life they live is forever unfolding at Subaru.

Partners That Care

Subaru has spent decades building relationships with dozens of organizations that believe in building a cleaner, greener, and more hopeful world as much as we do. Through our Share the Love sales event, new Subaru owners have helped us donate nearly $20 million over the last four years to charities such as the American Forests, ASPCA®, Make-A-Wish Foundation®, Meals on Wheels Association of America and Special Olympics. We look forward to continuing the trend in the years to come.

We support local communities through the Subaru of America Foundation (SOAF) – donating $6.8 million so far – and we engage with outdoor partners to support all ways our owners get out there.

Cars That Last

Life is too important to slow down with a car you can't rely on. That's why we build each of our vehicles with the highest standards of manufacturing, with designs that are inherently tough, and with engineering that can keep you going—all with quality and consistency. This commi™ent is why 96% of all the vehicles we've built in the last 10 years are still on the road today.1 It's also why Subaru vehicles keep their value so well. In fact, ALG gave Subaru their Residual Value Award as the best mainstream automotive brand for 2012—the third year in a row.2

"I drove my first Subaru 376,000 miles. This one has 295,000 miles, and it still runs great. Subaru makes the best all-wheel-drive cars in the world." —Dr. Hardy Herger, PhD

Subaru Life

Love every mile. Live every moment. Getting out there. Getting going. Getting to where your life is lived. Whether you're taking a new turn or simply taking a break, we build every Subaru to help you take it all in. Smart features and engineering help you do more of what you live for, and award-winning safety helps you do it with assurance. It's the joy of having a car that you don't just love to drive, but one built for life. And we think that's why owners always tell us, "I love my Subaru."

Badge of Ownership

One way Subaru owners express their love is with a unique badge that reflects their interests and passions.

Built to take life on the road, off the road and to the end of the road.

Camping, gardening and 100K miles. The Subaru Badge of Ownership offers 22 different ways to show how you experience the world. How many will you claim?

"All of my lifelong dreams just came true. First, I bought my dream car: a Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited. Then, my boss gave me time off for a much-needed vacation. Next, my dream girl was able to take a trip at the same time. Finally, it all came together in Monument Valley! Miracle!" Eldar A., Houston, TX

We try not to waste a thing. Even waste.

In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) became the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to reach zero landfill status and be designated a wildlife habitat. And every Subaru plant continues to use green suppliers, reduce manufacturing wastes and cut CO2 emissions.

Wildlife Habitat

In 2003, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. became the first automotive assembly plant to be designated as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. SIA's 800+ acres serves as a home for a wide variety of animals, including: whitetail deer, rabbits, Canadian geese, mallard ducks, squirrels, beavers, coyotes, snapping turtles, frogs, red-tail hawks, the blue heron, and the bald eagle.

Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV)1 Status

Because clear skies are just as important as clean landscapes, we've engineered our vehicles to impact the air quality as little as possible. As a result the Outback, Forester, Legacy, Impreza and XV Crosstrek models have all achieved Partial Zero Emission Vehicle—PZEV1—status, meaning they are among the cleanest and most fuel-efficient vehicles available in the U.S. based on smog and greenhouse gas (GHG) ratings and overall fuel economy. And we've done it without compromising performance and versatility.

Green Partners

We've spent decades building relationships with those who believe in building a cleaner and greener world as much as we do. That's why we support organizations such as Leave No Trace, which promotes responsible recreation.

1 2013 Subaru Impreza and XV Crosstrek 2.0L, and Forester, Outback, Legacy 2.5L non-turbo models achieving a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) rating by the California Air Resources Board are available in all 50 states. Only those registered in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont will be eligible for the 15 years/150,000 mile emission warranty. Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington vehicles are not covered under PZEV emissions control warranty. See your warranty maintenance booklet for additional information.
