"During Hurricane Irene, my family and I were unexpectedly trapped in Catskill, NY. Most roads were closed due to flooding and we were trying to make our way to an emergency shelter when a giant tree fell across both lanes of Highway 23A. I love my Subaru for protecting my babies!" - Amy W., Altamont, NY

"I do animal disaster relief, foster dogs, rehab dogs, train dogs, pet sit for dogs and Fern the Outback is there with me for all of it! She is like a part of the family and never lets me down." - Kelly R., Snow Camp, NC

MPG + AWD

Efficiency

Because your fuel should outlast your task.

Now achieving up to 32 highway MPG1 with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the 2014 Outback enables you to go up to 500 miles on a tank of fuel2. And with available X-MODETM featuring Hill Descent Control that helps safely navigate through the steep, the bad and the slippery, the all-new Outback is as capable as it is efficient. An open invitation to go far and get more done.

Engines

Much to do means there's much to enjoy in the clean, yet pleasurable 2014 Outback. It delivers an engaging drive that's also eco-friendly. Since every non-turbo Outback that Subaru makes is Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV)-rated3, it's one of the cleanest crossovers on the road. So busy days can still mean blue skies in the all-new Outback.

32 MPG1

  • 2.5-liter 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine
  • 170 horsepower
  • 174 lb-ft of torque

28 MPG1

  • 2.0-liter direct-injected turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® engine
  • 250 horsepower

Transmissions

The low-maintenance Lineartronic® CVT smoothly gets the most from your Outback. Rather than shifting through each gear, it continuously adjusts to the engine's demands to ensure the highest MPG possible. A 6-speed manual transmission is also available if you prefer to keep the control in your hands.

Passengers and cargo both get more breathing room in the all-new Outback. There's more room for front and rear passengers, doors open wider and there's more cargo room than before.

Safe and Secure

All-condition Handling

Confidence in all conditions.

Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive continually keeps the power routed to all four wheels, ensuring an outstanding grip in snow, rain or rough road. And now it's even better at handling steep inclines and harsher terrain.

With a push of the button, the available X-MODETM featuring Hill Descent Control takes control of the engine, transmission, AWD and brakes at low speeds to help you more easily navigate bad roads, slippery surfaces and steep hills with confidence. Hill Descent Control is especially helpful when you're descending a steep hill, making sure your Outback descends at a set speed. In the all-new Outback, you can count on control in almost any condition.

Optimal Traction

Winning an uphill battle.

With Subaru AWD

Without

Drag circle uphill.

Continually grabbing for the best grip on the road, Subaru Symmetrical AWD sends power to the wheels with the best traction when other wheels lose theirs. It's the freedom you need to tackle steep or rough roads with confidence.

With Subaru AWD

With Subaru Symmetrical AWD proactively sending power to all four wheels all the time, the vehicle has more than enough traction to climb the hill.

Without

With many front-wheel-drive-biased AWD systems, power distribution is more reactive and power transfer often takes place after slippage occurs, resulting in a struggle for traction.

Safe and Secure

Ready to react.

When danger steps into your path, the safest course is to step around it. The signature traction, stability and control of Subaru Symmetrical AWD help you steer clear of trouble.

Boxer Engine

Engine

Smoother Operation

Power on an even plane.

The pistons move horizontally in 180-degree opposition to each other, so each naturally cancels out the vibrations of the other. The end result is smooth and controlled power.

  • INLINE ENGINE
  • SUBARU BOXER® engine
  • V-TYPE ENGINE

Increased Durability

Built to last.

The engine's flat design is inherently rigid and experiences less vibration than traditional "V" or inline engines. In other words, it's extremely well built and uniquely durable, so you can get more out of it.

Greater Handling Agility

Most engines are taller and harder to balance.

Click and drag to balance the lines.

The SUBARU BOXER® engine has a lower profile and is centered for greater stability.

The engine's lower profile and symmetrical design, delivers a more grounded, balanced drive. It feels responsive, tight in the turns and stable in maneuvers, allowing you to drive with more confidence.

Outback 2.0XT

A turbocharged taskmaster.

Utility with just the right amount of sport, the Outback 2.0XT features a new turbocharged, direct-injected SUBARU BOXER® engine, Lineartronic® CVT and aggressive looks that reveal the fiercer side of the Outback 2.0XT.

New Turbocharged Engine

A rush of power when you crave it, the turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® engine features 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque delivered across a wide range. There's also custom performance at the push of a button with the Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) that enables three distinctive performance modes. Now fun to do is also fun to drive.

High Torque CVT with Manual Modes

Get the most out of your Outback. Its high-torque Lineartronic® CVT ensures you'll have peak performance and optimal MPG at every speed. And its paddle shifters enable you to grab more control when you want it with 6- and 8-speed manual modes1.

Sport-tuned Suspension

The responsive suspension of the Outback 2.0XT keeps its turbocharged drive agile and planted. Sport-enhanced components and a further reinforced chassis combine to give it dynamic handling that's controlled and confident.

Aggressive Styling

A more aggressive front end and exclusive 18-inch wheels let you know this turbocharged crossover was designed for more enthusiastic driving.

In Action

Safety

Circumstances don't define a Subaru. They reveal it.

"An IIHS Top Safety Pick for seven years running (2007-2013)."1 - Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

Total Safety

It's under the most challenging circumstances that you find the true value of what you drive. With advanced accident avoidance and exceptional passenger protection, the Outback is engineered to be at its best in a worst-case scenario. And now with available EyeSight® and seven standard airbags, this Outback is taking safety to a whole other level.2, 3

Passenger Protection

To make the Outback even safer, we added a driver's side knee airbag, bringing the total to seven standard airbags for additional protection in the event of a crash.3

All-around Protection

Should the unexpected happen, you can count on the exceptionally strong Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame to help protect everyone inside.

Increased Awareness

Like an extra pair of eyes for the road ahead, the available EyeSight® driver-assist system monitors the road ahead, warns you when it spots potential danger and can intervene to help you avoid it.2 When you're backing up, the available Rear-Vision Camera gives you a clearer view of the area behind your vehicle, so you can be in charge of your surroundings.

Exceptional Control

Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive helps keep things stable in emergency maneuvers, while VDC electronic stability control can detect loss of control and intervene to help keep you on your intended path.

Stopping Power

Confidence in braking comes from its powerful and reliable disc brakes with advanced Brake Assist that helps ensure maximum pressure is applied when you need it.

EyeSight

Looking out by looking ahead.

The most important thing a Subaru can do is protect the people in it. We're always looking for better ways to do it, and now the 2014 Outback is available with an innovative new driver-assist system that's watching the road with you: EyeSight®1. Like a second pair of eyes for the road ahead, it watches for potential danger, warns you when it spots it, and can even apply brakes to help you avoid it.

Partners that Care

The Subaru "Share the Love" sales event began in 2008 as a way for Subaru to give back to causes our owners are passionate about.

During the event, for every new vehicle leased or sold, Subaru donated $250 to the owner's choice of five participating charities. After five years of the Share the Love sales event, Subaru has donated nearly $25 million dollars. This year's participating charities included the Alzheimer's Association®, ASPCA®, Make-A-Wish®, Meals on Wheels Association of America® and USO. We're thrilled that we've been able to help such deserving causes and are grateful to our owners for helping us make this event a success year after year.

Cars That Last

127,000 miles and counting

"This past weekend the kids and I set out for one last trip before they had to go back to school. In search of California's state fish, the golden trout, we car camped with friends near Mono Pass and day hiked into this incredible string of lakes known as Little Lakes Valley. We caught 25 fish within 3 hours. Rainbows, brookies and yes, the elusive golden trout! The kids were in heaven."

"Once again our Outback comfortably held all the gear and food (basically everything we needed) for our 4-day car camping trip without any problems. We sure had ourselves a summer!" - Terry P., Long Beach, CA

Subaru Life

Winds of the North Pacific

"My 2000 Outback hit 200,000 miles on our way to the beach in scenic Homer, Alaska. We were ready for a relaxing evening, but when we exited our cars, a 65 MPH wind hit us. With the help of our Subarus, we were able to build a shelter and find some peace, and even got a fire going." - Bronwyn J., Anchorage, AK

This Subie is Made for Caching

"My 2011 Outback is my 4th Subaru, and I love it, especially for my crazy outdoor hobby, Geocaching! Actually, I have taken 3 out of 4 Subies (the first was my first car, 35 years ago!) geocaching - a Baja, an Impreza WRX, and now this wonderful Outback. Today, I visited some local mine sites, and had to go off-road a bit to get there. No problem! My caching buddy asked if I needed to, 'put it in 4 wheel drive?' But I said, 'No problem. It's ALL wheel drive, ALL the time!' Just wanted to thank you for your wonderful vehicles!" - Sabrina J., Chesterfield, VA

Farm to School or Farm to Outback

"At Vermont FEED - a statewide Farm to School program that works with schools and communities to raise awareness about healthy food, the role of Vermont farms and farmers, and good nutrition - we do A LOT of hauling! ... At a recent regional workshop, ... we all arrived to unload our cars and set-up for an afternoon of events to find that every single one of us drove a Subaru Outback! ... To add to the mix, our organization just hired two new interns to work with us this year, and both of them also drive Subaru Outbacks, so they automatically fit in!" - Danielle P., Roxbury, VT

Subaru Life

Farm to School or Farm to Outback

Meze Café & Market owner, Kari Kittinger, is a huge supporter of the farm-to-table movement and creates her menu mainly from the produce she sources from local farms and farmers markets. We offered to see what she could do with a 2014 Outback and she showed us how she makes it all happen.

Lifestyle

A job well done leads to time well spent.

PZEV/Environment

Almost like you were never there.

Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV)1

We love the outdoors too, so we took extra steps to preserve it. Available in every state, every 2014 non-turbo Outback and Impreza, XV Crosstrek, and select Outback and Legacy models are certified Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV). A hard to achieve rating that means these vehicles can have even lower emissions than some hybrids or alternative fuel vehicles.

Wildlife Habitat

In 2003, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. became the first automotive assembly plant to be designated as a Backyard Wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. SIA's 800+ acres serve as a home for a wide variety of animals.

Zero-landfill

In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) became the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to reach zero-landfill status and be designated a wildlife habitat. And every Subaru plant continues to use green suppliers, reduce manufacturing wastes and cut CO2 emissions.
